The National Technical Museum is a state-funded organisation, which has scientific and research activities directly enshrined in its founding charter and research and development is therefore an essential prerequisite for its activities.

The National Technical Museum has long been sponsoring and coordinating research in the field of the history of science, technology and industry in the Czech lands. Research and scientific activities form a necessary platform supporting the professional background of the collections and exhibitions. The individual collections of the NTM are systematically created also on the basis of scientific knowledge and research activities; the acquisition of expert documentation and scientific research of the environment from which the objects are obtained is an essential part of this. The aforementioned areas of research are also supported in the archival holdings managed by the NTM Archives, the Archives of the Museum of Architecture and Construction and the library holdings of the NTM Library.

The NTM Research Laboratory carries out analyses for restoration and conservation activities and acts as a consulting and training centre in the field of preventive conservation. It is involved in the research tasks of other institutions as well as in its own research projects.

Within the NTM there is a digitization workplace equipped with the necessary high-level technology, For the purpose of organizing conferences and workshops the NTM has a modern conference hall.

Staffing for scientific and research activities is provided by the Scientific Secretary's Department, the Preventive Conservation Department and professional staff across the NTM's collections departments in collaboration with the Publications and Editing Department.

The Scientific Council is an advisory body to the Director General of the NTM. The remit of the Scientific Council is anchored in the Organisational Regulations of the National Technical Museum.

The NTM was registered in the list of research organisations maintained by the Ministry of Education and Science on 4 November 2017.
