The collection documents the development from the first attempts to capture motion and depict action to the cinematograph of the Lumière brothers. It features original magic lanterns that allowed for the illusion of movement through multiple projections. The collection of hand-painted projection images is particularly rich. The collection also includes dozens of stroboscopes, magic drums and similar devices – optical toys that used the fading of visual perception to perform simple actions. The collection of France’s É J. Mareye chronophotographs is truly unique. The NTM’s entire collection of original É. J. Mareye chronophotographs makes it the second largest such collection in the world.
